Bike repairs, beekeeping, willow weaving and more at St John's Eco-Fest

St John’s Church on Hills Road, Cambridge is running an Eco-Festival on Saturday 12 October 2024, from 12 noon to 3pm, with a host of stalls and displays to encourage us to ‘reduce, re-use, repair and recycle’.

Owl Bikes (Papworth Trust) will offer basic repairs such as punctures, brakes and gear fixes at budget prices. Information and advice will be available from Cambridge Carbon Footprint, local gardeners and allotment holders, environmental groups and Cambridgeshire Beekeepers, who will be selling honey. EMG Motor Group will also be there to share their knowledge of electric vehicles.

Willow weaver Catherine Tregaskes will tempt you with baskets and garden items, as will Yomella Cosmetics offering natural soaps and room fragrances. Also for sale will be handmade bug hotels, pottery and locally grown, seasonal fruit and vegetables (subject to availability).

Refreshments and light lunches will be available and there will be a book swap table, so bring along one or two books to exchange.

Revd Nell Whiscombe, Curate at St John the Evangelist Church and chair of their Eco-Church group said:

“As individuals and as a church we try hard to reduce our carbon footprint and live in a more sustainable way, but we all need encouragement and a few tips as to how to do this better. I hope that our Eco-Festival will enable people to pick up ideas and maybe even some sustainably sourced Christmas presents, to help them on this journey.”

In 2022 St John’s Church achieved a Bronze Award from the environmental charity A Rocha UK. It is currently working towards a Silver Award.

Entry to the Eco-Festival is free of charge, with donations invited for refreshments and lunches. For more information visit www.stjohntheevangelistcambridge.org

Planning your Visit

New to Church?

If you are planning your first visit to St John’s, welcome! We hope the information below will help you.

Our Sunday morning services begin at 10.00am. When you arrive, you will be greeted by one of our welcoming team who will help you find somewhere to sit and will give you a service booklet and a hymn book. Please see our ‘Sunday services’ page for more details of services and times.
We serve tea, coffee and biscuits after the morning service and we hope very much that you will stay for a chat. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility: There is wheelchair access through powered double doors, and an accessible toilet. We have a small car park, and there is free parking on a Sunday in the surrounding streets. You may wish to arrive 10-15 minutes early if you need a parking space close to the church.

You can expect:
- A warm welcome, with everything you need to follow the service easily;
- Beautiful music in the English choral tradition at both Sunday services, led by the St John's choir and organist;
- A talk or sermon, usually focused on the readings we have heard;
- On Sunday and Wednesday mornings, tea or coffee afterwards and time to chat with others.

What about children?
We have a regular Children’s Church on Sunday mornings for 4-11 year-olds. The children learn about the same Bible readings we are hearing in church, with games, activities and prayers. We also have an All-Age service, where everybody worships together, on the first Sunday of each month. Find out more about Children's Ministry
